The North Face Kids’ ThermoBall Hooded Jacket is a strong everyday winter jacket for school days, errands, playground stops, shoulder-season hikes, and mild winter days when kids need real warmth without the bulk of a heavy parka.
The ThermoBall Eco synthetic insulation keeps kids warm without adding much weight or bulk. It feels light, packs down small, and still offers insulation if it gets damp. The nylon shell has a DWR finish to shed light moisture, and details like the elastic cuffs, draft flap, zippered hand pockets, and droptail hem make it more functional than a basic fleece or sweatshirt.
I especially like the removable hood. Most days, my son does not mind wearing one. Occasionally, though, a hood is a hard no, and no amount of cajoling will get him out the door in a hooded jacket. Being able to remove it turns this from a jacket he sometimes fights into one he is more likely to wear.
This is not the jacket I’d choose for long, low-activity days in serious cold. But for everyday use through moderate winter, from school drop-off to playground stops to weekend outings, it strikes a useful balance: warm enough to make a difference, light enough that kids do not mind wearing it.
