Tern GSD S10 Gen 3 Review

The Tern GSD S10 Gen 3 is one of the most expensive e-cargo bikes you can buy, but it also makes the strongest case for treating a cargo bike as a real family vehicle.

The Bosch motor delivers smooth, controlled assistance and has enough power to make steep hills manageable with two kids and all their school gear on the back. The bike also feels remarkably composed when fully loaded, whether climbing slowly or descending at speed. Four-piston hydraulic brakes provide strong, predictable stopping power, while the suspension fork and suspension seat post take the edge off rough pavement.

The GSD is designed to carry heavy loads day after day. Its rear rack can be configured for children, groceries, sports gear, or even an adult passenger, and Tern offers an extensive collection of panniers, racks, seats, rails, and weather-protection accessories. That flexibility allows the same bike to handle school runs in the morning, errands in the afternoon, and family outings on the weekend.

It is also unusually easy for two adults to share. The seat post and handlebar adjust quickly without tools, accommodating riders with substantially different heights. When the ride is over, the handlebar folds, the seat drops, and the bike can stand vertically on its rear rack to reduce the amount of floor space it occupies.

The obvious drawback is the price. Compared with another bicycle, the GSD is difficult to justify on value alone. But that calculation changes if it allows your household to avoid buying an additional car. The premium buys smoother power delivery, superb handling under load, durable components, and an extensive accessory list and dealer ecosystem.

The GSD will not replace every car trip, but it can replace enough of them to change how a household gets around. For our family, it turned school runs and errands into rides our kids actively requested. They named it the “Party Bus,” and the name stuck.
